Studio Nova have many years experience as wedding and portrait photographers, working mainly in and around Peterhead, Fraserburgh and Aberdeen, we frequently travel throughout Aberdeenshire and all over Scotland, including Perth, Dundee, Glasgow and Edinburgh areas.
Since your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life, it is important to record it with professionally taken photographs to look back on and to show future generations. Having decided to make use of a professional wedding portrait photographer, choosing which photographer should be relatively straightforward. The general advice for when to book a photographer is as soon as you have fixed the date of the wedding. The problem with securing a top wedding photographers such as Studio Nova is that we can be booked well in advance, sometimes travelling throughout the UK and even flown abroad to weddings! This means that it is important to plan ahead – and even consider tailoring your wedding date to the availability of the photographer. At Studio Nova, we can discuss with you and provisionally book a date so that you can check suitability with other considerations, with the peace of mind that the Studio Nova has you ‘pencilled in’! After the wedding, in years to come, it is your wedding photographs which will be one of the most important reminders of your special day. There are wedding photographers to suit every taste and budget, however, like so much in life, you get what you pay for. We would recommend the starting point for choosing your wedding photographer is to see some of our work. You might see sample photos at someone else's wedding, at a wedding exhibition or on a photographer’s website, which may give you inspiration and ideas of what you would like us to achieve. The next, and most important step is to meet the photographer – especially while we may be around from when the bride is getting ready, right through to the end of the reception, you need to get along with the photographer. At Studio Nova, this is one of our strongest points! We are a small friendly team so you are assured of a personal service to keep you relaxed and happy before, during and after the event.
Very few wedding couples are used to being photographed, many brides, and the majority of grooms, aren't naturally comfortable in front of a camera. At Studio Nova, we believe it is important for the photographer to overcome this before the wedding day. We often take the opportunity of an engagement photo, or pre-wedding portrait, to get to know you and to get you used to being photographed. Especially if you are looking for natural, un-posed shots, you need to be relaxed in front of the camera so that sometimes you are not even aware that you are being photographed.
Communication is also the name of the game. Once you have chosen Studio Nova as your wedding photographer, you will spend some time with us going over the photographs you want. If you have chosen a venue because you wanted to be photographed in a particular location, as your wedding photographers, we will make ourselves familiar with the venue before the wedding day wherever possible. If it is an outdoor location, we will discuss a wet weather alternative. Like many photographers, we offer a choice to have some of your photographs taken in black and white or sepia. Black and white images work well and add variety to the wedding photo album. You could even go for colour tints. Before the wedding, the Studio Nova photographer will make a point of familiarising himself with the list of your family and guests for the group shots. Usually with the help of his assistant and the best man, the photographer will endeavour to get these shots taken as quickly as possible; however, most people have stories of weddings where the group shots seem to take forever. This only becomes an issue if time for photos hasn't been scheduled into the day. Professional wedding photographers such as Studio Nova will be able to give you a realistic timescale for the post ceremony photos, and will tell you if your list is too long! Of course it helps enormously if the sun is shining while the photos are being taken, and if guests not involved in the photos are kept fed and watered, or even entertained!

While the traditional shots of the bride and groom, family groups, cutting the cake and so on still have their place, and are valued by parents and grandparents, more and more couples don't want just a historical recording of their marriage but request a reportage-style of wedding photography which tells the story of the whole day rather than just the ceremony. Studio Nova are among those photographers who are happy to oblige by taking casually posed or impromptu shots with a much more contemporary feel. Digital photography has also revolutionised the world of wedding photography for Studio Nova and their clients, our photographer now only uses digital cameras for weddings. Well suited to informal, reportage-style photography, digital cameras increase dramatically the number of photos that can be taken. With a conventional camera, the photographer may restrict himself to a hundred or so photos. With a digital camera, the photographer can easily take up to 1,000 photographs. The photographer may take a whole series of pictures during the speeches, for example, in order to capture some of the emotions of the speaker and the guests. Digital photos can be reviewed and checked instantly with the added security of having them backed up both to a computer and CD. With no film costs and only the chosen photos printed, digital photography also reduces the material costs. Reprint costs are also lower than with conventional photography.

Another advantage of digital photos is that they can be manipulated quickly and easily with the ever-improving software that is now available; Studio Nova have many year’s post processing experience. It is straightforward to re-touch a digital photo, so if someone blinked in the one photo, eyes, or heads, can be swapped from one photo to another. Should someone get forgotten in a group shot, they can be imported into the photo! Black and white, or sepia, photos can be made from colour ones. With digital photography, it is relatively simple to turn a photo into an artistic statement, for example by having only one colour focal point, such as the bride's bouquet, on a black and white photo. Digital photographs can also be grouped into a montage, given new backgrounds, borders and shadows, and literally turned into works of art.

Just as the world of wedding photography has moved on, so has the world of wedding albums. While the traditional album with one enlargement per page is still very much available in versions to suit all tastes and budgets, there are now more contemporary albums to suit the latest styles of wedding photography available from Studio Nova. You may choose an album which is more like a limited edition book of your wedding day, a far cry from the traditional album which so often ends up gathering dust on a shelf. The new style wedding book comes in different styles, characterised by having several images on each page. Photos may also be overlapped and enhanced with clever use of graphic design such as drop shadows, or even using specialist software, to incorporate your wedding stationery. It is even possible for the book to be "refreshed" with different photos at any time.

There is only one chance to immortalise your wedding day and capture all those memories, but with a little thought and forward planning and the expertise of Studio Nova, you can end up with photographs that you and others will enjoy for years to come.
